Presented by industry expert and thought leader Andrew Marsh, this webinar explains how Euro NCAP is established and how it operates alongside EU27 vehicle type approval. While type approval sets the minimum legal safety requirements for vehicles, Euro NCAP operates as an independent consumer information programme, assessing vehicles against higher and continually evolving safety standards. The webinar clarifies how legal compliance differs from consumer‑focused safety comparison, and outlines Euro NCAP’s governance and membership, which includes European transport authorities, consumer organisations and motoring clubs that collectively fund and oversee the programme.
Andrew Marsh also explains the Euro NCAP testing process, including test scope, limitations and costs. The webinar covers why multiple vehicles are required to produce a single assessment, why ratings only apply to specific vehicle variants, and how star ratings are grouped. It highlights why five‑star ratings cannot be compared across different assessment years, even between vehicles of the same size, due to increasing test severity and expanding requirements over time.
Finally, the webinar demonstrates Euro NCAP’s role in driving continuous safety improvement beyond legislation. It explores key vehicle safety technologies influenced by Euro NCAP, including pedestrian‑friendly front‑end structures such as pop‑up bonnets, advanced airbag systems, ultra‑high‑strength steels, electronic stability control, autonomous emergency braking, and traffic sign recognition linked to speed control systems.
