Pride Month isn’t just about rainbow flags and parades - it’s about visibility, inclusion and being proud of who you are. For those of us in the automotive world, it’s also a chance to reflect on how our sector can evolve to become more welcoming, diverse, and future-ready.
As a pansexual and neurodivergent person working within the IMI, Pride Month is deeply personal to me. It’s not just about celebrating who we are but about creating space in a sector that hasn’t always been built with people like us in mind. I’m proud to be visible - not just for myself, but for the young people coming up through the ranks who deserve to see themselves represented in every corner of the motor sector.
Breaking Stereotypes, Rebuilding Culture
Let’s be honest: the automotive sector hasn’t always been known for diversity and misconceptions still exist. But the tide is turning. Today, the sector is full of people from different backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
The majority of students in automotive are part of Gen Z - and wow, are they championing that change! They’ve shown themselves to be more open, more aware, and more likely to challenge the status quo. That matters, because real progress happens when people feel safe to be their true selves at work, in training, and in the classroom.
Why Pride Matters in the Trade
For LGBTQ+ students and apprentices, feeling seen and supported in a perceived male-dominated, heteronormative environment isn’t always easy. Pride Month reminds us that everyone has a place in the sector. It’s about more than policies - it’s about everyday actions and mutual respect.
How You Can Make a Difference
Be a Good Ally: You don’t need to understand to respect, approaching people with a respectful, and supportive manner makes a big difference.
Call It Out: If you hear something disrespectful, don’t stay silent. Speak up - silence often sounds like agreement! – If you don’t feel comfortable, raise it to managers it is everyone’s job to end bias in the workplace.
Remember: Everyone is on a different journey of learning, and sometimes what is said isn’t out of hate but not knowing.
Get Involved: Whether it’s sharing posts, sharing your story with the IMI’s There’s More to Motor campaign, supporting inclusive events, or asking your college or centre about EDI (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) initiatives - your voice matters.
The Road Ahead
As future techs, body repair specialists, auto electricians, service advisors (and more), you’re not just learning a trade - you’re shaping the culture of the motor sector.
This Pride Month let’s be proud of how far we’ve come and stay committed to where we’re going. Because a truly inclusive sector is one where everyone, no matter who they are, can feel respected, empowered, and proud to be part of it.
