The doors officially opened at the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event 2026, and the energy across the NEC quickly built throughout the day.
As automotive professionals gathered to explore the latest innovations, technologies and industry insights, the IMI was right at the heart of the action, meeting members, connecting with businesses, and showcasing how we support the future of the sector.
A strong start on the show floor
From the moment the event began, there was a real sense of momentum. Visitors engaged with exhibitors, took part in live demonstrations, and explored practical solutions to the challenges facing today’s aftermarket.
For the IMI team, day one was filled with valuable conversations that highlighted both the opportunities and pressures shaping the industry.
Showcasing how we’re futureproofing the industry
A key focus for the IMI across the event was demonstrating how we are helping to futureproof the automotive workforce. We showcased IMI TechSafe recognition, which plays an important role in ensuring technicians working on electric and hybrid vehicles have the right skills and knowledge to do so safely.
There was strong interest from both individuals and employers looking to better understand safe working practices, recognised competence in EV roles, and how professional recognition supports career progression and business credibility. These conversations reflected the pace of change across the sector, particularly as the shift towards electrification continues.
Hands-on EV learning with Lucas-Nuelle
We were also joined on the stand by Lucas-Nuelle, who delivered interactive workshops across both days. These sessions gave visitors the opportunity to explore EV systems and develop a better understanding of the practical skills needed for modern vehicles. Visitors were keen to get involved, ask questions and engage with the technology.
Real conversations, real impact
Beyond the demonstrations, it was the conversations that made the biggest impact.
Across the IMI stand, we spoke with technicians looking to upskill or gain recognition, employers focused on attracting and retaining talent, and training providers navigating evolving qualification needs.
“It’s been really valuable to spend time speaking directly with both prospective and existing IMI members. We’ve been able to answer questions about membership, but also hear first-hand about their experiences, which helps us better understand what matters most to them and how we can continue to support them.”Jack Grinnell, IMI Membership Marketing Manager
Highlights from the day
Spending time exploring the wider event highlighted the diversity of the industry.
From live dent pulling at the Collision & Detail Lab to the precision on display at Paint & Spray Live, it was clear how hands-on and technical many roles across the sector have become.
Sessions focused on practical pathways into automotive reinforced the importance of clear, accessible routes into the industry — something the IMI continues to champion.
It was also great to see initiatives like Automechanika’s 30 Under 30 recognising emerging talent, including IMI Annual Dinner Award winners Hollie King and Daisy Moore.

The day two team arrives
Day two carried forward the energy from a busy opening, with strong footfall and a packed schedule of demonstrations and workshops.
With a fresh team on the stand, we welcomed new visitors, reconnected with those returning, and continued conversations with professionals keen to understand how the IMI supports the sector.
The atmosphere across Hall 6 remained busy and positive throughout the day.
Inspiring the next generation
One of the standout moments from day two was the number of automotive students in attendance. Colleges from across the UK brought learners to the event, giving them the chance to experience the industry first-hand.
We spoke with many students on the IMI stand who were keen to discuss career development opportunities and share the IMI qualifications they were working towards. Their enthusiasm and engagement were encouraging and reflected a strong pipeline of future talent entering the industry.
Being positioned next to the Ignite Arena also gave us the chance to hear a range of inspiring talks throughout the day. Sessions from organisations including Apprenticeship Central and Autotech added to the atmosphere and highlighted the opportunities available to those starting out in the sector.
A strong finish
As the event drew to a close, there was a real sense of positivity. Across both days, the IMI team connected with technicians, employers, training providers, students and partners — all working towards building a skilled, future-ready workforce. The collaboration seen throughout the event was incredibly encouraging, reinforcing the value of bringing the industry together in this way.
We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to visit the stand and speak with the team. We look forward to continuing those conversations beyond the event!
