How the Fellowship of the Motor Industry links the sector

FMI

The Fellowship of the Motor Industry has close ties with the IMI, going back many years. Recently the Fellowship has provided a £2,000 bursary for young automotive students.

This year the money went to the IMI’s Full-Time Student of the Year award winner Aaron Linsey, studying at the Colchester Institute. An exceptional student Linsey said: “The Fellowship’s bursary has allowed me to embark on more training so that I can stand out to potential employers and further my career in the automotive industry.”

The bursary will help boost an already impressive early career. Linsey started his academic voyage in September 2021, with a foundational Level 1 Certificate in Automotive Maintenance before moving on to a Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair programme before starting his Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair studies.

Colleagues for life

As well as giving a new generation a boost, the Fellowship is also about industry people keeping in touch with ex-colleagues and making new friends, while enjoying a very diverse range of events. We have well over 600 members, with numbers growing every month. We have many members that are still very active in the industry, although the majority of the membership are either retired, coming up to retirement, or have chosen to go part-time to provide a greater work-life balance. I have been a member for over 12 years, and still work in a consultancy capacity, but always make time to enjoy the fun and fellowship among like-minded people.

Many are also members of the IMI (I have been a FIMI since 2002.) We would love to see more applications from IMI colleagues, membership is open to anyone who has worked, or is still working, in the automotive industry regardless of sector.

History of success

The Fellowship has been in existence for nearly 90 years and has a great heritage, with past members including industry icons such as Sir William Lyons the founder of Jaguar Cars.

It has a varied programme of events across the UK; these include lunches with amusing and interesting speakers, visits to manufacturing plants, golf, horse racing, boat trips on the Thames, and visits to motor museums.
We ensure that the cost of attending events is not prohibitive, and we often benefit from very attractive discounts. Many of our new members have been introduced to the Fellowship by current members, but if you do not know anyone do contact us, and we will do the rest.
We are a very open and friendly organisation, and we will make sure you are made very welcome. No “cliques” just a set of people with a love for the Motor Industry and who enjoy fun and Fellowship.
