How to get ready for your MOT assessment

MOT professional

The annual MOT assessment looming. We all know any form of test can feel like a heavy cloud and a little overwhelming but fear not, I’m here to help you with some tips and tricks.

Get prepared

Firstly get yourself a plan of action, plan a time to get some study in, and make sure you get plenty of rest the night before the assessment. Also, don’t forget to eat something with energy and nutrition to give you some extra brain power on the day.

Your bible to help you pass is your MOT guide. It will help you with a lot of answers, and, of course, you have your experience to back you up. And the (minimum) three hours of training prior to the exam will give you a general idea of the questions you can expect to face. Remember to take plenty of notes if you aren’t completely sure of something, and check the special notices for the latest information, including changes in how you test.

Teamwork

A good idea is to study with peers, so you can test each other – you never know someone may pick up on something you weren’t aware of. The best method would be to do a dummy MOT together and test one another. Remember, the assessment is based on multiple areas, including: classes, corrosion, what would and wouldn’t be a fail. Revert back to your MOT inspection manuals, special notices (again), and don’t forget the GOV.UK website has a page dedicated to topics you will need to study.

Make sure you’re fully up to date with any new materials, new equipment or features on vehicles such as new headlights. Is there a specific way to test for example, and check you know the correct procedure?

Whether you’ve been testing for decades or are new to the game, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It never hurts to ask someone what they think, or lean on someone with more experience.

Completing everything

I’d recommend using a computer rather than a smartphone to complete your assessment, it’s a lot quicker and more efficient. No matter what device you use to take the assessment, always go back and check your answers before submitting. Take a moment, clear your mind and look at your answers again, you never know that little bit of extra clarity could be the difference between passing or failing.

Most importantly, take your time and don’t rush, and have faith in yourself. You got this!
