How the IMI engages UK Parliamentary Select Committees

parliament

We’re striving to champion the interests of our members in the dynamic landscape of the UK motor industry. One significant way we achieve this is by actively engaging with the influential Select Committees in the UK Parliament.

Select Committees, comprising MPs from various parties, undertake essential scrutiny of the government's actions and policies. By connecting with these committees, the IMI can ensure that the concerns and aspirations of our members are heard and acted on.

Engagement is important but it isn’t always a straightforward process and requires different levels of participation.

Identifying relevant committees

We meticulously identify the Select Committees that directly impact the motor industry. By closely monitoring their activities, inquiries, and reports, we stay well-informed about key developments and policies affecting our members.

Providing expert evidence

When Select Committees embark on inquiries relating to the motor industry, IMI Policy provides written evidence that draws upon our deep expertise and the interests of our membership. Through well-researched insights and practical recommendations, we contribute substantively to informing the committee's work.

Active participation

If invited, our representatives actively participate in committee hearings as witnesses. By sharing our industry-specific knowledge, answering committee members' questions, and offering informed perspectives, we enhance the quality of discussions and ensure our members' voices are heard.

Engaging with committee members

The IMI proactively engages with individual committee members or their staff, forging valuable connections. Through productive discussions, we provide supplementary information, expert insights, and address specific concerns, ensuring our industry's unique challenges and opportunities are well understood.

Informing committee reports

As Select Committees produce reports based on their inquiries, IMI Policy provides crucial input during the drafting process. By offering feedback, proposing amendments, and suggesting additional recommendations, we ensure that the final reports reflect the interests and priorities of our membership.

Amplifying recommendations

Once committee reports are released, IMI Policy carefully analyses their findings and recommendations. We then disseminate the key messages to our membership, stakeholders, and policymakers, advocating for the adoption of recommendations that promote a thriving motor industry.

Through our dedicated work with UK Parliamentary Select Committees, the IMI actively represents our members' interests, informs policy decisions, and drives positive change in the motor industry. Most recently, we responded to the Light Vehicle MOT testing consultation and call for evidence, ensuring that our members' perspectives and expertise were considered in shaping future regulations. Additionally, we actively participated in the most recent Transport Select Committee, staying up to date with the latest developments and discussions surrounding the industry and we’ll continue to be the voice for our members and the industry.
