The Auto Electrical and Mobile Electrical Installation National Occupational Standards in review

The Auto Electrical and Mobile Electrical Installation NOS has now been reviewed by expert working groups across the UK and changes/additions have been suggested. In order to see the updated draft documents please click here.

A summary of the changes is as follows:

  • Knowledge regarding ‘the hazards associated with working on or near high voltage components’ added to all relevant units
  • Glossary entry for ‘Vehicles’ amended to include Heavy Goods and Passenger Service Vehicles in all relevant units
  • AEMEI02 (Install motor vehicle electrical system enhancements) –
    • Title amended to ‘Install basic motor vehicle electrical system enhancements’
    • Scope/range 1k – ‘software modification’ removed (to be placed within new unit for complex installations – see below)
  • NEW UNIT - AEMEI02a (Install complex motor vehicle electrical system enhancements) –
    • Created to support complex installations, such as those for motorhomes or emergency service vehicles
  • VF03 (Inspect, repair and replace commercial vehicle tyres) -
    • to align with the Heavy Vehicle and Bus & Coach NOS review last year, all references to ‘commercial’ have been replaced with ‘heavy goods and public service vehicle’
  • AEMEI03 (Repair and overhaul motor vehicle electrical units) –
    • Overview amended to include the statement ‘NB: This unit does not include working on high voltage components.
      • Question for the sector - is this appropriate?
    • NO UNIT FEEDBACK RECEIVED
  • AEMEI04 (Diagnose and rectify motor vehicle drivetrain electrical faults) –
    • NO FEEDBACK RECEIVED
  • AEMEI06 (Diagnose and rectify motor vehicle electrical unit and component faults) –
    • Knowledge 16 amended to ‘the operation of the electrical and electronic systems for electric, hybrid transmission systems including alternative fuel vehicles (including regenerative braking systems)’
      • Question for the sector - is this appropriate?
    • Knowledge 19 amended, ‘failures’ removed
      • Question for the sector - is this appropriate? Can a system fail without a specific fault?
    • Scope/range 1c (‘Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS)’ amended to ‘Safety Systems to allow for other vehicle types, other than Light Vehicle
      • Question for the sector - is this appropriate?
      • If not, what should this be, or should it just be removed?
  • AEMEI07 (Identify and fit motor vehicle auxiliary locks and security devices) –
    • Is this units still relevant for the AEME sector, or is this aimed more at the restoration sector?
    • NO UNIT FEEDBACK RECEIVED
  • AEMEI08 (Inspect motor vehicles using prescribed inspection methods) -
    • NO UNIT FEEDBACK RECEIVED
  • AEMEI09 (Identify suitability, installation and configuration of vehicle enhancements and vehicle security systems) –
    • Scope/range replaced to align with qualification
      • Question for the sector – is this now correct?
  • AEMEI10 (Conduct vehicle enhancement and installation consultations with customers in the motor vehicle environment) –
    • This is a soft skills units so should be removed as not AEME specific – may be reintroduced as core unit when that suite comes up for review
