IMI partners with Scottish Motor Trade Association to launch online training platform

Demonstrating the growing importance of online learning technology to improve standards in the motor retail sector, the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), is partnering with the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) to launch the SMTA Virtual Learning Environment - an online training platform for SMTA members.

The IMI has put together over 200 modules for the SMTA to offer to its members, as part of its Skills Solution. The SMTA Virtual Learning Environment supports the IMI’s Campaigns for Change strategy, focusing on attracting, developing and retaining talent in the motor retail sector.

The SMTA Virtual Learning Environment offers bespoke training aimed at Scottish workshops to provide access to a range of modules covering topics such brakes and transmission training as well as the emerging electric vehicles technology. All the modules are available online with 24/7 access, minimising the downtime for staff in workshops. Crucially, each completed module allows self-certification, demonstrating up-to-date Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The  Virtual Learning Environment

Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI said: “The Virtual Learning Environment has been developed in partnership with the SMTA, exploiting the latest online technology to give Scottish motor trade professionals unlimited access to over 200 IMI modules. With 12 months’ access to IMI training materials, SMTA members can enhance their technical skills, including electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as a wide range of vehicle systems and diagnostic techniques.

“The industry is moving so quickly.  It’s vital, therefore that on-going training – delivered in the most convenient and accessible form – is a vital component of maintaining best practice for motor technicians. Working closely with the SMTA, we continue to support a wide range of motor professionals, offering them training for every level, from novice to master technician.”

Sandy Burgess of the SMTA adds: “We are delighted to be working with the IMI to deliver the SMTA Virtual Learning Environment, which allows workshop technicians to study at their own pace and stay up-to-date with the latest automotive technology. The IMI consistently provides the very best training and guidance on working practices, making it the ideal partner for this training solution. With 24/7 access for 12 months, more technicians than ever will be able to benefit from the IMI’s outstanding training and support as a result of this initiative.”
