National Occupational Standards - Your chance to feedback and shape the cycle sector

NOS Cycle Feedback

The IMI is developing National Occupational Standards for the cycle sector and now’s the time to give your feedback to ensure they are fit for purpose

For some, National Occupational Standards (NOS) will be well known, for others, it’ll be the first time you’ve heard of them.

NOS are used to help develop qualifications used in apprenticeship frameworks in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland as well as the IMI accreditation scheme for staff in all nations of the UK. The standards describe what an individual in a certain role should be able to do and the knowledge and understanding they need. Companies can use them to help design their in-house training, on-the-job coaching or performance management systems.

Change is coming

The IMI is developing new standards for Cycle Maintenance and Repair, to include e-bikes. Expert working group meetings have been held electronically via Teams and the new draft NOS are ready.

Wider consultation - Phase 2

The next phase is for the wider sector to give their feedback on the developments.

These are the National Occupational Standards that have been developed:

  • Carry out a systematic cycle inspection
  • Carry out routine maintenance on a cycle
  • Maintain cycle wheel and tyre systems
  • Dismantle, inspect and reassemble a cycle
  • Remove and replace cycle non-hydraulic braking systems
  • Remove and replace cycle derailleur gear components
  • Maintain and repair cycle hydraulic brake systems
  • Set up, maintain and diagnose complex cycle gear systems
  • Maintain and repair complex cycle wheels
  • Maintain and repair cycle suspension systems
  • Build a bespoke cycle to specification
  • Safely carry out operations on, near or with light electric vehicles
  • Diagnose, remove and replace e-cycle units and components
  • Overhaul e-cycle system units and components
  • Augment a cycle

The wider consultation phase closes on 13th March, so please give us your feedback now by clicking here.

To discuss anything about the project please contact Caroline Harris - carolineh@theimi.org.uk.

Once the feedback has been analysed, relevant tweaks will be made to the NOS before they are published. They will then be available for anyone to see or use on the NOS Database.

Many thanks for your interest and support for these projects – we can’t complete them without your expertise.
