So long to the Ford Fiesta

So long to the Ford Fiesta

So long to the Ford Fiesta. A pillar of the blue oval’s model line-up has reached the end of its production life. I’m sure not many people saw that coming; it’s been on UK roads since 1976 and has been one of the country’s best selling cars ever since. But it’s a sign of the times.

Even total sales of 22 million in more than 50 countries can’t beat facts. The industry is changing. Quickly. We’re not only shifting to alternative powertrains but a consumer base who want different body styles. SUVs mainly. So, in the future, Ford will have a lot more vehicles with a raised silhouette and powered by something other than combustion. The change of pace isn’t only happening at Ford.

BMW is investing heavily in hydrogen, pushing a technology that could well sit in tandem with battery electric vehicles to keep automotive moving.

Hydrogen has had a lot of challenges to overcome, but BMW – working closely with Toyota – is developing the technology so it works in mainstream vehicles. Its fleet of iX5 Hydrogen test and demonstration cars could well help bring the fuel a step closer to public European roads.

With a rate of change that’s only going to accelerate we all need to make sure we’re futureproofed – as organisations and individuals.

The IMI is helping make sure we’re all prepared: IMI TechSafe identifies a member's professionalism and safe working practice in the field of EVs and other safety-critical vehicle systems such as ADAS. It will also soon incorporate Hydrogen and highly connected vehicles systems. And don’t forget IMI members also receive 25% off CPD courses; check out the latest offerings to see how you could upskill yourself.

We can’t hide from the future, and I’m sure none of us want to join the Ford Fiesta as a part of a bygone era of the automotive sector.
