Consultations shaping automotive skills
Our consultations set out the IMI’s formal responses to government calls for evidence and consultation exercises.
They reflect employer insight, professional expertise and workforce data, ensuring automotive skills, standards and safety considerations are represented in decision‑making processes.
eVED Consultation Response
The IMI supports the introduction of Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) as part of the long-term move towards a more sustainable motoring tax system.
A mileage-linked model could create a clearer link between how much a vehicle is used and the tax paid than a flat-rate charge.
Supercharging the EV Transition
The IMI welcomes the opportunity to submit evidence to the Transport Committee’s inquiry into Supercharging the Electric Vehicle Transition.
We focus on the readiness of the automotive service and repair workforce to support the transition to electric vehicles and the implications this has for long-term adoption.
Mandating Vehicle Safety Technologies
The IMI strongly supports the Department’s proposal to mandate the GSR2-equivalent suite of safety technologies under the GB type approval scheme. Closer alignment with the EU framework is sensible for industry, simplifies type approval for manufacturers and, most importantly, raises the safety floor for vehicles entering UK service.
Introducing mandatory eyesight testing for older drivers
The IMI supports the principle of mandatory eyesight testing for older drivers and welcomes the move away from self declaration. However, we urge the Department for Transport to recognise that an eyesight test only addresses one side of the road safety equation.
Parental Leave and Pay Review
The IMI welcomes the opportunity to submit evidence to the Government’s Parental Leave and Pay Review. We focus on how current entitlements impact workforce retention, progression and skills sustainability across the automotive sector, particularly in supporting greater participation and long-term career development.
Improving moped and motorcycle training, testing and licensing
The IMI supports the direction of travel set out by the DVSA. Our caution is reserved for proposals that could compress competence routes, in particular Progressive Access via training without independent assessment, and any proposal to remove the CBT syllabus from primary legislation.
16–19 Level 1 English and Maths Qualifications Consultation
The IMI welcomes the opportunity to respond to the Department for Education’s consultation on the introduction of new Level 1 English and maths qualifications for 16–19 learners.
Introducing a Minimum Learning Period for Learner Drivers Consultation
The IMI supports the principle of a structured minimum learning period, with a mandated syllabus and a record of supervised hours.
SOC2020 Revision Consultation Response
The IMI submitted a response to the ONS SOC2020 consultation to ensure that automotive occupations are appropriately recognised.
