ADAS TechSafe Technician Forecast - Q3 2025

Infographic summarising the ADAS workforce and vehicle technology outlook. It shows that 11,518 technicians hold ADAS TechSafe–eligible qualifications, representing around 4% of the UK technician workforce. It also shows that 17% of UK cars have some level of Level 2 autonomy.

Each quarter, we track the size of the UK’s ADAS repair workforce using TechSafe certification data. This update reviews recent ADAS certification trends and updates our projections through to 2035, comparing technician supply with forecast growth in vehicles fitted with Level 2 driver assistance systems.

While more technicians continue to gain ADAS-related qualifications, the overall rate of growth is misaligned with the pace of change in vehicle technology.

The data shows a widening gap between the number of technicians holding ADAS qualifications and the number forecast to be required as vehicle technology continues to advance.

ADAS TechSafe Technician Forecast: Q3 2025 at a glance

  • 11,518 technicians hold an ADAS TechSafe-eligible qualification
  • This represents around 4% of the UK technician workforce
  • 27% of UK cars now feature some degree of Level 2 autonomy
  • Forecasts show this rising to around 40% by the late 2020s
  • Technician supply continues to grow more slowly than forecast demand

Recent ADAS certification trends

Awarding bodies, including the IMI, continue to add ADAS-qualified technicians each quarter, but volumes stay modest. Each quarter, only a few hundred technicians gain new ADAS-related TechSafe awards.

As a result, the total number of ADAS-qualified technicians continues to increase, but not at a pace that aligns workforce capacity with forecast demand. Recent certification activity also includes a proportion of renewals rather than new entrants, which limits growth in the overall pool of ADAS-qualified technicians.

Vehicle technology continues to outpace training

The UK car parc includes a growing share of vehicles with Level 2 autonomy. More than one in four cars now operates with some degree of Level 2 autonomy.

Forecasts show this share increasing steadily through the remainder of the decade. By the late 2020s, around two in five vehicles are expected to feature Level 2 autonomy, increasing the number of vehicles equipped with Level 2 driver assistance systems.

Looking ahead to 2035: The supply gap

Our projections show the number of ADAS-qualified technicians continuing to rise over the next decade, reaching around 30,000 by 2030 and around 60,000 by 2035 under current growth assumptions.

However, expected demand grows faster. The minimum number of ADAS-capable technicians required rises to around 205,000 by 2030 and around 240,000 by 2035.

This creates a widening gap between supply and demand, with shortfalls increasing through the early 2030s. By 2035, the projected gap is substantial under the current trajectory.

Even with continued growth in ADAS certification, technician supply does not expand quickly enough to align with forecast demand.

Why timing matters

The proportion of the UK car parc equipped with Level 2 autonomy increases most rapidly in the years leading up to 2030.

This creates a limited window to scale training, support employers, and increase uptake of ADAS qualifications. Delays during this period compound over time, making the gap harder to close as vehicle technology continues to advance.
