Understanding the UK Accident & Repair Workforce Report

The UK’s Accident & Repair sector is facing a critical turning point as vehicle technology evolves and demand for skilled technicians grows. New research from the Institute of the Motor Industry highlights increasing pressures caused by an ageing workforce, skills shortages, and a lack of clear entry pathways into the industry.
Specialist roles such as paint, body repair, and glazing are becoming harder to recruit for, creating challenges for employers and risking reduced repair capacity across the UK. At the same time, emerging technologies including electric vehicles and advanced driver systems are increasing the need for new skills and training.
The report calls for coordinated action across industry, education, and government to improve awareness of careers in Accident & Repair, strengthen routes into employment, and ensure training meets real-world demand. The IMI says urgent action is needed to build a resilient, future-ready workforce and support the long-term sustainability of the sector.
