Harley Chambers' Journey to the IMI Skills Competition Finals
Chantelle Badhan , Marketing Executive
What began as a fascination with engines and mechanics has evolved into a clear career path for Harley, fuelled by curiosity, determination, and hands-on experience through the IMI Skills Competition. Hear from Harley, as well as his training provider, Steer Automotive, on his journey to the IMI Skills Competition 2025 finals.
What inspired you to join the automotive industry?
In addition to my lifelong passion for cars, my decision to pursue a career in the motor industry was driven by a deep appreciation for innovation and the opportunity to be part of a fast-evolving sector. The automotive industry uniquely blends engineering, technology, and hands-on experience, offering countless opportunities to develop transferable skills.
I was particularly drawn to its dynamic nature and the constant advancement in vehicle design and performance. This environment not only fuels my enthusiasm but also motivates me to contribute meaningfully and shape a successful future within the industry.
Have you faced any challenges on your journey, and how have you overcome them?
During my apprenticeship, I faced two significant challenges that tested my resilience, adaptability, and dedication to developing a successful career in the motor vehicle industry.
The first challenge was keeping pace with the rapid advancement of vehicle technologies. As the industry shifts towards electrification, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and more complex repair procedures, I found myself needing to adapt quickly to emerging technology, specialist accident repair equipment, tooling and methods that were evolving beyond a traditional training curriculum.
To meet this challenge, I took the initiative to expand my learning, accessing additional resources, participating in supplementary training, and collaborating closely with Steer Academy, Thatcham Academy, and experienced colleagues. Through this proactive approach, I deepened my understanding of hybrid and electric vehicle systems and modern repair techniques.
Embracing these changes not only enhanced my technical capabilities but also underscored the value of continuous learning in a fast-changing industry.
The second challenge came with the unexpected retirement of my workshop mentor, a figure who had played a key role in my early development. Their departure created a gap in both technical guidance and personal encouragement.
While this was initially a difficult adjustment, it ultimately became a pivotal moment in my apprenticeship. I learned to become more self-sufficient, sought feedback from other experienced technicians, and gained confidence in making well-informed decisions. This experience significantly strengthened my problem-solving skills and helped me grow into a more independent and capable team member.
Overcoming these challenges has been a defining part of my professional journey. They have shaped not only my technical expertise but also my personal growth, reinforcing my commitment to continuous improvement and long-term success in the motor vehicle industry.
