Hear from Oliver Thomas, currently studying at Cardiff and Vale College towards IMI Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance, and his employer, Celtic Vacuum, on his journey to the IMI Skills Competition Final.
Can you tell us about your career journey? What inspired you to join the automotive industry?
I was working for a local haulage firm on weekends, cleaning the workshop and cleaning vehicles. I asked if there were any jobs full-time or apprenticeships available. Due to personal reasons, I left work to help at home. I then started with Celvac (Celtic Vacuum) and started at Cardiff and Vale College in the September. With support from various mentors within Celvac and my college, I have progressed to where I am today. I have always enjoyed cars, and then being able to work on larger vehicles has inspired me even more.
Have you faced any challenges on your journey, and how have you overcome them?
I have faced many challenges over the last few years, my main challenge has been lacking confidence in my decisions. However, progressing in the competition has given me the boost I needed.
How would you describe your competition experience so far?
So far it has been very nerve-wracking, but enjoyable at the same time. I have gained so much confidence. Being alongside likeminded people has shown me what the quality of our trade should be like.
How do you think the competition will help you with your career?
It would say along with being a confidence builder, it has cemented my role within the company as an established mechanic and it backs up my qualification. It proves I am serious about the role and I am keen to keep learning with my current organisation.
