Reflections From My First Weeks at the IMI

My first two weeks as CEO of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) have flown by. From the moment I arrived at Fanshaws, I’ve been struck by the warmth of the team, the passion for our purpose, and the opportunity we have to make a real difference to the automotive industry and its workforce.
I joined the IMI because I believe deeply in the role our organisation plays in shaping the future of the automotive sector. The industry is undergoing huge transformation, from the acceleration in adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and emerging technologies, to the importance of attracting, training, and retaining the next generation of talent. The IMI’s work at the heart of this change is inspiring, and I feel privileged to now play my part in driving it forward.
Meeting Automotive Members and Partners
Getting out and meeting IMI members and partners has been a real highlight. I’ve already had the chance to connect with Volkswagen Group, Delphi, and welcome a delegation from, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, one of our Malaysian centres to Fanshaws.
These conversations have reinforced the importance of collaboration. It’s only by working together across the automotive industry that we can address the skills challenges we face.
It was particularly exciting to hear first-hand about the training and development work being carried out to support apprentices and employees. Whether it’s apprenticeships helping young people into the sector or training and CPD ensuring professionals stay ahead of the curve, the IMI is at the forefront of preparing the workforce for the future.
The Future of the IMI and the Automotive Workforce
As I look ahead, I see the IMI’s role as being clearer than ever to support the automotive workforce through change, and to make sure businesses and individuals are equipped with the skills they need. Our focus on attracting and recruiting new talent, retaining skilled professionals, and preparing for future technologies including hydrogen and AI will be central to everything we do.
Growing our IMI membership will also be key. Membership not only gives individuals access to resources and recognition, but also strengthens the collective voice of the industry at a time when influence and advocacy matter most.
I’m particularly motivated by the opportunity to showcase the diversity of roles across the automotive sector. From technicians and apprentices to managers and innovators, there’s so much potential to inspire the next generation to see automotive as a career for life.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
These first two weeks have been energising, and I’m excited about the journey ahead. The IMI has a proud history, but what excites me most is its future. We have the opportunity to create a future where we continue to champion the automotive industry, advocate for its workforce, and deliver the skills and training that will keep it thriving.
I look forward to meeting more members, partners, and stakeholders in the coming weeks. Together, I believe we can ensure the IMI remains at the heart of the automotive industry, driving positive change for the sector and for society.
