Reflections on our First Regional Member Event
Lea Scholey , Membership Engagement Manager
Our first-ever IMI Regional Event as part of the new Member Network was more than just a milestone; it was a powerful reminder of the strength, passion and depth of experience within our membership community.
Bringing people together from across the country created space for meaningful conversations, honest reflection and shared purpose, and it was clear throughout the day just how important that connection is.
We were delighted to hear from our CEO, Nick Connor FIMI, who spoke openly with members about the direction of the IMI, what the next five years might look like and the ongoing skills gap facing the automotive sector. Nick also took time to answer questions directly from members, creating a valuable two-way dialogue that reinforced our commitment to listening, transparency and collaboration as we look to the future.
We also heard from Emma Carrigy MIMI, our Head of Research, Careers & Inclusion, who highlighted the vital role apprenticeships play in securing the future of our industry. Emma spoke passionately about opening the door to automotive careers for young people and the influence that parents, carers and educators have on a young person’s decision-making. Her insights reinforced just how important it is that we collectively champion apprenticeships and present the automotive sector as a rewarding, future-facing career choice.
Our external speaker, Andrew Marsh FIMI, delivered a thought-provoking session on the rapid evolution of automotive technology. He explored the challenges posed by increasingly complex vehicles, including concerns around repairability, and stressed the importance of technicians continually upskilling to remain effective and relevant. It was a timely reminder that standing still is not an option in a sector changing at such pace.
A particularly special moment of the day was taking the time to thank our Member Association Chairs for their incredible dedication over the decades. With Sussex recently celebrating its 100th anniversary, it was a proud opportunity to recognise the commitment, leadership and impact these individuals have had across the network. As we continue to align within the new Member Network, we are excited to build on this legacy; delivering more meaningful events, strengthening collaboration, and better supporting and recognising our Event Lead volunteers.
Members were at the heart of the day through the interactive discussion session centred around four “Big Questions” tackling some of the most pressing issues facing the industry.
Hearing directly from members, drawing on such a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, was one of the most powerful aspects of the event. It highlighted not only the diversity of careers within automotive, but also the collective willingness to engage, challenge ideas and work together on solutions. For me, it truly felt like we connected throughout the day.
This event reaffirmed how important it is to keep that connection going. Our members are central to everything we do, and we remain committed to celebrating their successes, listening to their concerns and working together to find real, practical solutions to the challenges facing our industry. This first Regional Event was just the beginning, and we’re excited for what comes next!
