Unlocking the Potential of ADAS: Bridging the Knowledge Gap
A Call to Transform the Automotive Landscape
Emma Carrigy , Research & Insight Manager
In the fast-evolving landscape of automotive technology, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are becoming increasingly integral to the driving experience.
The surge in ADAS-equipped vehicles not only emphasises the need for skilled technicians but also underscores the importance of driver awareness regarding these features.
Why Driver Knowledge Matters:
It's not just about having the technology; it's about understanding it. Drivers are solely responsible in ensuring the optimal performance and safety of vehicles equipped with ADAS. Regular maintenance and calibration are key, as neglecting these tasks can lead to inaccurate readings, false alerts, and compromised safety.
Current Driver Awareness:
However, our research sheds light on a concerning reality – only 18% of drivers can correctly identify ADAS, despite a staggering 86% having this technology in their cars. It’s little surprise therefore that 39% of drivers believe ADAS calibration occurs during an MOT, which it currently does not, and just 47% consider it an urgent task.
The Road Ahead:
As ADAS technologies become commonplace, their integration into MOT testing is currently under consultation, with the IMI supporting its inclusion. With the UK car parc being notably younger compared to European counterparts, the role of technology in inspections is gaining prominence. Intriguingly, 68% of drivers express a desire to include ADAS calibration checks in MOT testing inspections.
Bridging the Gap:
As we navigate the future of automotive advancements, informed drivers and skilled technicians will be the driving force behind safer, technologically empowered roads.
Education for consumers and technicians will be key. Bridging the knowledge gap between the prevalence of ADAS and driver understanding is crucial for maximising the benefits of this technology.
Investing in training and education is key to preparing our technicians to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with ADAS technologies, as set out in the IMI’s report, Future Skills Requirements: Top ten drivers for skills change in UK automotive in the next two years. The report also recognises that by 2024, 39,000 ADAS trained technicians will be required in the UK.
Industry Action
Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy are one example of the important commitment to a workforce sufficiently trained in ADAS.
We believe that completing training in ADAS technology is crucial for technicians, not only due to its increasing importance in modern vehicles but also to meet the industry insurance requirements.Leigh Marsden
Leigh Marsden, Managing Director at Pro-Tech MOT & Automotive Academy, offers his insight into what action his company is taking.
“We have invested and partnered with ADAS Equipment Specialists to ensure that technicians complete their IMI ADAS Qualifications and Accreditations using the latest technology.
By offering the full portfolio of IMI Qualifications and Accreditations for ADAS, and the new ADAS Techsafe CPD, we believe that completing training in ADAS technology is crucial for technicians, not only due to its increasing importance in modern vehicles but also to meet the industry insurance requirements.
ADAS systems play a vital role in enhancing vehicle safety and reducing accidents. Insurance providers require technicians to have the correct training and certification to ensure that vehicles are serviced, and maintained by qualified professionals and that they comply with the IIR standards.”
