What People Really Want from Work: Purpose, Impact, and Meaning
Aimee Wallis AMIMI , Careers Partnership Lead
In today’s world of work, the conversation is shifting. It’s no longer just about salary, titles, or employee benefits, people are looking for something deeper. They want to feel valued, to know their work is rewarding, and to be part of something that contributes to the greater good.
Whether it’s working for an organisation that supports ethical practices, contributes to social causes, or simply makes a positive difference, employees are increasingly drawn to roles that align with their personal values. Job satisfaction is now directly linked with having genuine purpose, and for many, that means choosing careers that offer meaning, impact, and the chance to be part of something bigger than themselves.
This shift is especially relevant in the automotive industry, which is undergoing a seismic transformation toward sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility. From electric and hydrogen vehicle development to inclusive workforce initiatives, automotive careers now offer the chance to contribute to cleaner transport, smarter mobility, and greater access to opportunity.
That’s where the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) comes in. As the professional body for people working and learning in automotive, the IMI exists to champion the individuals who will power the UK’s transition to net zero. Through its qualifications, accreditation, and policy work, the IMI is equipping the workforce with the green skills needed to deliver clean, connected, and sustainable mobility.
The UK’s shift to electric, connected, and hydrogen vehicles depends not only on technology, but on skilled people, from EV technicians and engineers to educators and data analysts. Every automotive professional plays a vital part in reducing emissions and creating a sustainable transport future.
Green careers are about people as much as technology, and the IMI champions green careers across the entire automotive ecosystem. From service and repair to logistics, recycling, and software development, new career pathways are emerging every day. Automotive isn’t part of the problem, it’s driving the solution, helping shape a cleaner, fairer future for all.
Take Nathan Frost, Technician, Halfords for example. Having always wanted to join the automotive sector, Nathan started his career age 16.
“The way that the industry is moving at the minute means there is so much new technology, which also keeps the job challenging. Gone are the days of automotive being full of oil and grease monkeys. It has evolved so much, even within the last five years alone.
For me personally, looking back on my career, I have never been bored. Every day there has been a new challenge. The automotive industry will always be here.
People will always have a car. It’s just about how this evolves. With the new technology, there is so much to work on, such as data and computer systems. We need more people with these skills to come into the industry to work on this.”
For those seeking purpose and impact, the road ahead is full of opportunity. The automotive sector offers exciting careers where innovation meets responsibility, and where your skills can truly make a difference.
