My parents embraced stock car racing when I was young, immersing me in the world of motorsports during many weekend events. Watching and learning from them maintaining their cars sparked my interest from an early age.
At 17, I joined the British Army and embarked on an apprenticeship style course in mechanical engineering. This experience provided me with invaluable hands-on training and qualifications, engraining the skills and values that shape who I am today.
After nearly a decade of serving in challenging environments around the world, I decided to transition to a more stable lifestyle to start a family. This change led me to connect with the team at Polaris UK, who were in search of someone with my background for a technical services role. I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to support the brand and also a network of around 90 dealerships with anything technical across the UK.
I officially joined Polaris in March 2018, where I received a warm welcome from the team. Not only was I given the chance to learn the ins and outs of the role, but I was also encouraged to explore my unique skills, making for a refreshing experience. Working at Polaris UK has significantly expanded my skill set in essential areas such as computer skills, customer service excellence, mechanical knowledge, diagnostic techniques, training organization and delivery, as well as financial budgeting, all highly sought-after skills in the business world.
In 2021, Polaris announced the plans to launch the ground breaking High Voltage Electric Utility Vehicle, the ‘Ranger XP Kinetic.’ My colleague and I took the initiative to find training providers to ensure that Polaris UK's technical team were well-versed in alternative fuelling options beyond traditional internal combustion engines. We undertook accredited training with The IMI, delivered by Delphi Technologies, which was professionally delivered by their experts and aligned perfectly with our goals.
Recognising the importance of adhering to UK health and safety regulations, we prioritised training for our network of dealerships that would be working with the new model. Collaborating with The IMI and Delphi Technologies was not only productive but also a lot of fun, as we worked alongside truly inspiring individuals. Together, our aim was to share industry-leading knowledge, enabling both new and experienced technicians to broaden their skill sets and implement safe working practices. This collaboration leads to a reduction in workplace accidents, increases familiarity with electric vehicles across the country, and drives the industry forward through customer-focused professional experiences, all of which are contributing to the goal of achieving net zero.
The collaboration between Polaris, The IMI, and Delphi Technologies has enriched industry knowledge and cements the standards for future technicians and businesses intending on working with electric vehicles.
The IMI are advocates of advancing the automotive industry forward, setting exemplary standards across the board. They recognise and celebrate the contributions of those who are dedicated to creating a brighter future for all.
