The driving safety of a motor vehicle depends largely on the steering.

A vehicle needs a suspension system to cushion and dampen out road shocks.  This provides comfort to the passengers and prevents damage to the load and vehicle components.

An automatic gearbox contains special devices that automatically provide various gear ratios, as they are needed. Most automatic gearboxes have several forward gears and one reverse gear. Instead of a gearstick, the driver moves a lever called a selector.

In a vehicle with a manual gearbox, the clutch allows a temporary neutral position for gear changes and also a gradual way of taking up drive from rest. This course will cover the purpose of the clutch, clutch mechanisms and different types of clutch including coil spring and diaphragm.

Because of the speed at which an engine runs, and in order to produce enough torque at the road wheels, a fixed gear reduction is required, this is known as the final drive.

A transmission system gearbox is required because the power and torque of an engine changes at different speeds. The transmission also reverses the drive and provides a neutral position when required.

On-Board Diagnostics or OBD, was the name given to the early emission control and engine-management systems introduced in cars. OBD systems have been developed and enhanced in line with US government requirements into the current OBD2 standard which applies to all cars sold in the US from 1996.
