Attract and recruit

The challenge: The UK automotive sector is experiencing a significant talent shortage
This comes at a time when the industry is undergoing the most exciting and transformative period in over a century, driven by innovations in electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and sustainable mobility.
Despite these opportunities, outdated perceptions of the sector continue to act as a barrier, particularly for underrepresented groups. With more than 218 distinct occupations available, the industry offers a broad range of rewarding careers — but these must be made more visible and accessible to a wider, more diverse talent pool.
Our commitment:
The IMI is committed to supporting the automotive sector in attracting the best talent from across society. We are actively working with employers and policymakers to remove the systemic barriers that prevent people from entering the industry. This includes providing the tools and resources needed to support more inclusive recruitment practices and addressing gaps in training and qualifications that may deter potential candidates.
Our public awareness campaigns, such as There’s More to Motor, are helping to challenge outdated perceptions and position automotive as an innovative and inclusive career destination. We also provide targeted support for school leavers, individuals changing careers, and those returning to work, helping them to better understand and access the range of opportunities available in the sector.
The change:
To build a professional, sustainable workforce for the long term, the industry must address challenges around diversity, accessibility, and future readiness. As the sector continues to transform through electrification, automation, and green technologies, the IMI is prioritising the development of a workforce that is prepared for what lies ahead.
Our strategy aligns with national goals such as the UK’s Industrial Strategy and the Get Britain Working agenda. Through close collaboration with policymakers and industry stakeholders, we are advocating for policies that embed skills development into wider economic strategies. Our vision is of a resilient, agile workforce — one that not only adapts to change but leads it, ensuring the UK remains a global leader in automotive innovation and sustainability.

IMI Manifesto
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to thrive in a dynamic automotive industry. That means breaking down barriers to entry, especially for underrepresented groups, and supporting employers with the tools to invest in their people — whether that’s through improved access to funding, ongoing CPD, or more flexible training routes.
