Free resource for students considering an automotive career

Sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover and available to schools nationwide, Indicate has been adopted by local schools including The Park ESC in Hatfield and Birchwood High School in Bishops Stortford.

The resources comprise a student workbook and 12 lesson teaching plan that is based on real life activities within the motor industry. This covers subjects like statistics and data analysis, spanning sub-sectors which include motorsport, parts, sales and heavy vehicle. Crucially, the lessons allow students to explore mathematical concepts such as equivalence, proportional thinking and relationships and express them in written and oral forms.

Emily Hakansson, Careers Development Manager, The IMI, said: "Speaking to apprentices over the last year, I found that they showed great enthusiasm for maths in practice coupled with conceptual understanding. When discussing road cars and F1 for example, they could talk at length about power-to-weight ratios and how they impact acceleration and lap times. This prompted us to build Indicate around real world examples from the motor industry. Our aim is to make maths as engaging as possible for learners."

Using examples and specifications from current production vehicles and images from IMI partner Jaguar Land Rover, among others, Indicate is designed to offer a realistic, accessible insight into the motor industry. Ultimately, this fosters links between employers and schools or colleges. Studying motoring themed activities provides encouragement for students to visit local employers in the sector - fostering a key link between business, schools and colleges.

The programme also offers considerable flexibility, with teachers deciding the format and quantity of lessons delivered and whether they are undertaken by an individual or small group. In addition they can set the level of complexity around the student's abilities.
