Getting ready for 2021 and beyond

Holding hands

I, along with the rest of the industry, breathed a sigh of relief when the government announced that we could be coming out of this second lockdown next week and businesses would be allowed to reopen fully.

Just as in March, many businesses did stay open, providing servicing, maintenance and MOT, but frustratingly the doors closed on showrooms. It was a real kick given the huge investment in making businesses COVID secure. But now it really feels like there is some light at the end of the tunnel, and we can prepare for the other challenges appearing on the horizon.

We already know that from January 2021 the UK’s relationship with the EU is changing, and we need to be ready. But that’s only the beginning.

Electrification, autonomous technology, changing ownership models and a greater focus on digital sales are all due to have a huge impact on our industry. But this isn’t something that’s just happening in the UK, it’s a global phenomenon. You only have to read McKinsey & Company’s report on Reimagining the auto industry’s future: It’s now or never to see how far-reaching the changes are.

The IMI’s here to help you negotiate the transformations. We’ll push the government to support the industry, develop new approaches to make sure you’re ready, such as the IMI’s TechSafe professional standards campaign, and foster a new generation of talent through apprenticeships who can help take the industry into the future.

The world’s changing, and we can’t afford to stand still.
No matter what your concern, the IMI’s here to help, so if you need us please get in touch. We’re available on +44 (0)1992 519025, or send emails to hello@theimi.org.uk if you need us.

Stay safe,
