Services and support you need, for however long you need them

Steve Nash

The world continues to change in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the IMI is working hard to make sure our members get the services and support you need, for however long you need them.

It’s difficult to predict how the situation will develop, but we’ll remain flexible and adapt to any changes, so, as I mentioned in my first update, whatever type of business you’re part of – large corporation or small independent, and whatever stage of your career you’re at – we’ll be there for you.

Our action plan is progressing, and support will increase, as will our determination to find solutions to a range of challenges we’re all facing.

Apprenticeships and Qualifications

The IMI team is in constant dialogue with Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, external quality assurances organisations, training centres and employers as we develop solutions to make sure students approaching the completion of qualifications, along with Apprentices taking – and on the road to taking – their endpoint assessments can do so. We have already implemented remote engagement and test assessment wherever possible and will continue to trial solutions to make sure every aspect of the process can be completed. We’re also working to make sure, even where staff have been furloughed, they can continue their studies.

Dealers

We put our voice to others in the sector to make sure any staff who can often receive low salaries and high commissions be paid fairly under any furlough schemes that are put into place. We'll continue to work with the rest of the industry on this, and also be the voice for technicians, who often top up their earnings with overtime to make sure those who can't work don't miss out.

Teachers, parents and students

The IMI’s Autocity website is packed with free teaching resources, lesson plans, competitions and toolkits for all age groups. And if you’re a parent or student looking at what the motor industry has to offer there’s a section dedicated to help show what options are open to you. If the FAQ section doesn’t answer all your queries, drop us an email at careers@theimi.org.uk

MOT

There has been uncertainty surrounding MOT testers and training, but the DVSA has now clarified things with a deadline extension for MOT training and assessment to the end of April 2020. So now’s the time to make the most of the IMI’s resources to get yourself up to date.

eLearning

We’re now offering a range of free online courses which will be updated regularly, and cover topics including electric, heavy, and light vehicles. Although times are difficult, there is an opportunity for many to prepare for when we turn the corner on COVID-19. The IMI website has the latest offerings.

‪‬‬‬‬Make your voice heard

I will push our industry’s message whenever and wherever possible, but now is your chance. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy wants companies to get in touch with details of gaps in the government response to business downturn. So take the opportunity to tell them your concerns directly, send them an email at intel@beis.gov.uk

I’ll be in touch again in the coming days with a further update. Next week we’re going to look into how individuals can get help through financial hardship. In the meantime if you have any questions or want to discuss any aspect of our plans, you can contact us on +44 (0)1992 519025 or by emailing hello@theimi.org.uk

And for all the latest updates and for government-specific information head to our dedicated COVID website.

Look after yourselves and your families, and do let us know if the IMI can help you.

With my very best wishes,

Steve
