Automotive sector employment 2021-2031

The sector faces its biggest skills challenge in the past two decades. With a current record number of vacancies across the sector and the task to meet the new skills required to meet the green agenda it's certainly is a challenging time. At the same time, the UK workforce is ageing rapidly, resulting in fewer people of working age to support the economy. This is compounded by the short-term effects of the pandemic, leading many into early retirement, and by decreased immigration, which before Brexit had been a mainstay. Moreover, there is a risk that the availability of older workers could be greatly diminished by poor health, parttime working and skill shortages. This makes defining and understanding the related labour market essential.
