Each quarter, we publish updated EV TechSafe Technician Forecasts to track the growth of the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) repair workforce. This July 2025 update reviews certification trends from Q1 2025, and includes revised projections through to 2035.

The UK’s EV repair workforce grew in the first quarter of 2025, but progress still lags behind future demand.

Q1 2025 certification results

Awarding bodies and eligible IMI accreditations added 2,999 EV-qualified technicians in Q1 2025. That is 6% more than Q4 2024 and 25% fewer than Q1 2024. The UK total now stands at 66,788 qualified EV technicians.

Early outlook for Q2 2025

We expect around 3,122 certifications in Q2 2025. If achieved, this will lift the total to 69,910 technicians, which is about 28% of the workforce and 7% more than Q2 2024.

Looking ahead to 2035

Our projections indicate 139,684 qualified EV technicians overall by 2032, 150,667 by 2033 and 175,116 by 2035. Expected demand reaches the same figures, leaving a shortfall of 2,271 in 2032, 9,615 in 2033, 18,308 in 2034 and 25,435 in 2035.

If training providers and employers do not expand capacity sooner, workshops will face bottlenecks that reduce servicing capacity and risk consumer confidence in EVs.
