There’s More to Motor: What’s Driving the Next Generation into Automotive?

The automotive sector is evolving fast, and so are the people shaping its future.
In June, we took our There’s More to Motor campaign to Automechanika Birmingham, where we had the chance to speak directly with the next generation of automotive talent. Positioned in the Motorvate area, our stand brought together learners, professionals, and employers to explore the wide range of careers across the industry, and to challenge outdated stereotypes.
As part of the event, we spoke to young people to find out what they really think about the automotive sector: what draws them in, what makes them hesitate, and who’s inspired them along the way.
Here’s what we discovered.
Who is getting people into automotive?
When we asked attendees whether someone had influenced their decision to pursue a career in automotive, one answer stood out clearly: family.

Parents and other family members topped the list as the most common source of inspiration. For many young people, seeing a family member work in the trade, whether as a technician, business owner, or parts specialist, made the sector feel accessible, relatable, and rewarding.Motorvate attendees
Parents and other family members topped the list as the most common source of inspiration. For many young people, seeing a family member work in the trade, whether as a technician, business owner, or parts specialist, made the sector feel accessible, relatable, and rewarding. The power of seeing someone close to you thrive in a hands-on, skilled profession shouldn’t be underestimated.
Interestingly, the second most common response was “no one in particular.” This suggests that while role models help, some young people are independently discovering automotive through their own curiosity, exposure on social media, or simply a desire to work in a dynamic and evolving industry.
Friends came in third, indicating the impact of peer networks, a good reminder that enthusiasm for the industry can be contagious. Teachers and careers advisors were also mentioned, though less frequently, highlighting an opportunity for more schools and educators to spotlight automotive as a viable, exciting career path.
Whether it’s family ties, friend groups, or personal interest, one thing is clear: the route into automotive isn’t one-size-fits-all, and that’s part of what makes the sector so diverse and full of potential.
Why Are People Choosing Automotive?
The clearest message from our conversation was this: passion still drives people into the automotive industry.
When asked to pick the main reason they chose to enter the sector, 60% said they’ve always been interested in cars or technology. This strong foundation of curiosity and enthusiasm is what keeps the sector moving forward, whether it’s tinkering with engines, diving into diagnostics, or exploring the latest in EV and AI tech.
Beyond that, hands-on, practical work attracted the next largest group (16.67%). Automotive remains a sector where you can build, fix, and problem-solve daily, something that’s clearly appealing to people who don’t want to sit behind a desk all day.
Smaller numbers were drawn by career and salary prospects, or the idea of being part of something innovative. And for some (10%), it was simply that automotive seemed like a good option at the time, proof that even a casual entry can lead to a fulfilling career.
This spread of responses reinforces what we’ve long believed: there’s no single reason people choose automotive, but a blend of passion, practicality, and possibility continues to steer the next generation in.
What Would You Say to Someone Considering Automotive?
We asked participants: What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the sector? And the responses were overwhelmingly encouraging.
A clear theme emerged: just go for it.
From “Do it!” to “Take the risk” to “It’ll be the best decision you make,” many people were eager to champion the sector and the opportunities it offers. Whether they were still studying or already working in the trade, the message was consistent: if you’re interested, dive in.
Several respondents highlighted how fun, creative, and fulfilling the industry can be, especially for those who are eager to learn and adapt.
One person shared,
"A fulfilling and creative industry, constantly pushing the limits of technology.”
Another simply said:
“It’s fun and very creative.”
Lifelong learning was another key takeaway. As one respondent put it,
“Every new vehicle comes with new technology, we have to be ready with a smile to learn.”
The pace of change in automotive is fast, but for many, that’s part of the appeal.
Above all, many saw the sector as more than just a job. One person summed it up perfectly:
“It’s one big family once you meet the right people.”
