Who is it suitable for?

This VCQ is a retail motor industry qualification that covers activities that relate to service technicians working on caravan and motorhomes.

About

This work-based qualification assesses the competence and knowledge that people need to perform their job role effectively. Successful learners will demonstrate a broad working knowledge and understanding of:

  • health and safety in the workplace
  • skills associated with working on site
  • job roles in an automotive work environment.

The qualification includes:

  • removal and replacement and routine maintenance of:
  • conducting caravan and motorhome arrival and departure inspections.

Learners may also cover:

  • identifying and agreeing customer service needs
  • carrying out non-structural minor internal and external repairs.

Please see further notes at the bottom of this page.

Progression

For some learners this qualification could prepare them for progression to further learning and training. For others, this qualification could provide a useful recognition of their skills and knowledge, to aid their step from one job role to another

Assessment

Learners will demonstrate their occupational competence, skills and knowledge by collecting evidence of their work. This evidence is usually presented in a portfolio (however your approved centre may use an alternative method). The assessor will advise learners how to generate, collect and present their evidence. A learner’s knowledge and understanding will be assessed via:

  • online tests set by IMI (all unit levels)
  • written assessments (L3 units only).

Please read the following information:

Electrical units

Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, all employers have a duty to ensure that employees are competent to carry out any electrical duties expected of them. Completion of the electrical units provides learners with the basic knowledge and skills required to competently carry out the basic inspection, testing and replacement of certain components. It is important to note that they do not provide the full qualification required to carry out the installation or repair of 230 volt systems or components.

Gas units

The gas units provide learners with the basic knowledge and skills required to competently carry out inspection, basic testing and replacement of certain components. It is important to note that they do not provide the full qualification required to carry out the installation or repair of gas systems or components, or enable learners to work on caravans or motorhomes that are 'used' or 'hired out in the course of business'. Only GAS SAFE registered engineers are able to work on the gas systems on these types of vehicles.

Additional note:

Completion of the Gas and Electrical units within the Caravan and Motorhome Maintenance and Repair Qualifications is not currently recognised by the National Caravan Council (NCC) as entry for their Approved Workshop Scheme.
