Who is it suitable for?

This Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) is ideal for school and college learners aged 16-19, as well as 19+ learners, wishing to progress further into the Vehicle Maintenance sector of the Automotive Industry.
Learners will gain the specialist skills and knowledge required to kick start their technical career.

About

This Extended Diploma provides individuals a broad breadth of learning within four Applied Units. The criteria are contextualised for the retail motor industry. The Applied Units include:

  • Vehicle Science
  • Vehicle Maths
  • ICT for Vehicle Repair
  • Electric & Electronics

A key aspect of the IMI Extended Diplomas is their close relationship to Life Skills, i.e. Functional Skills / ESW. Candidates also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace.

This qualification is practical and engaging to motivate and support learners to gain key knowledge and skills required by vehicle maintenance employers, specialising in Light Vehicles.
With mandatory requirement for employer engagement, learners get the opportunity to experience the real workplace environment.
This qualification can be taken full or part time and is also approved on the DfE KS5 2019 Performance Tables.

Progression

Upon achieving this qualification, learners can progress onto further training and education in automotive and engineering subjects (including apprenticeships) or to a job role in the vehicle maintenance sector.

Assessment

For this qualification, learners must complete:

  • Online Assessments - Each mandatory group has an online assessment. Optional and additional units chosen may also require online assessment to be taken.
  • Core Unit (synoptic assessment) - This assessment is achieved through completion of unit Group B. It assesses both skills and knowledge obtained from Mandatory units.
  • Portfolio of evidence - This is required to prove learning outcomes are achieved through practical and tasks performed. IMI provide sample support material of practical and written tasks for optional use.
