Overview

This is a Level 4 vocational qualification which provides individuals with advanced levels of specialist technical knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to work as an advanced technician / engineer in the following automotive maintenance and repair sectors: Light Vehicle, Heavy Vehicle, Lift Truck or Transport Refrigeration, alongside the development of wider transferable skills for use across the whole retail motor industry.

This qualification was developed with input from employers, professional bodies and training providers; and therefore includes the core knowledge and skills required by the sector.

Learners taking this qualification are likely to be 19 years of age or over and have previously completed an automotive Advanced Apprenticeship or full level 3 qualification in an appropriate subject specialism relating to this qualification.  There are no other formal entry requirements for this qualification, however learners would benefit from some prior knowledge or experience in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle system faults. GCSEs in Maths and English at grades A*-C are also recommended. Selection for entry should take into account each applicant's existing academic/ vocational qualifications, experience and interest in working in the sector.

This Level 4 qualification provides a progression pathway from Level 3 automotive qualifications in Light Vehicle (601/7324/5 or 500/9814/7), Heavy Vehicle (601/7327/0 or 500/9812/3) and Lift Truck (600/0438/1) Maintenance qualifications, which will enable the learner to further develop and expand their knowledge, understanding and skills required to reach an advanced diagnostic technician /engineer level. Therefore this qualification is ideally suited to learners with prior experience or knowledge of automotive vehicle systems, tools and equipment, vehicle maintenance, diagnostics and health and safety.

Learners with limited prior knowledge and experience within these areas may be better suited to the Level 3 Certificates in Light Vehicle (601/7324/5) and Heavy Vehicle(601/7327/0)  or L3 Diploma Lift Truck (600/0438/1) Maintenance qualifications, which will enable them to develop their knowledge and experience prior to progressing to an advanced diagnostic technician/engineer level.

Who is the qualification for?

This qualification is for learners who have a keen interest in advanced automotive maintenance and are looking to progress into employment within this industry. It will provide them with the opportunity to develop their knowledge at the level suiting their ability at entry.

This qualification is an advanced technical Certificate at Level 4 and has been developed for employers, colleges and training providers to deliver to learners aged in the 19+ age group either on a full or part-time basis.

(The study of ‘A’ levels, such as Maths, Physics and English, would complement this qualification.)

The qualification has been designed to be practical, engaging and motivating to support learners in gaining the advanced knowledge and skills required by light, heavy vehicle, lift truck and transport refrigeration maintenance employers. Once they have achieved this qualification they can progress to higher education in automotive and engineering subjects (including a Higher Apprenticeship) or to a job role in light vehicle, heavy vehicle, lift truck or transport maintenance sector, as advanced technicians / engineers.
