Qualification Purpose:

These IMI Level 2 Technical Specialist Awards in MOT Testing provides further professional development opportunities for a Technician/Learner who has completed the Level 2 Autocare Technician apprenticeship standard ST0499 or an equivalent qualification in vehicle maintenance and repair at Level 2. 

The Technician/Learner must ensure they meet all the entry requirements, detailed within the qualification specification, prior to enrolling on this qualification.

This qualification has been developed in consultation with the DVSA and is subject to regular ongoing reviews due to new technologies and/or advancements in vehicle technology.     

The qualification content provides the essential knowledge and skills for an individual to work as a DVSA MOT Tester. The Technician/Learner will be able to work safely within a vehicle MOT test centre, communicate with colleagues and customers, carry out pre-test checks and highlight the condition of automotive components to ensure they meet the DVSA’s roadworthiness guidelines.

Individuals who wish to develop the knowledge and skills to enable testing of different classes (key below) within the MOT sector, should complete either IMI Level 2 Technical Specialist in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) (Award) or the IMI Level 2 Technical Specialist in MOT Testing (Classes 1 and 2) (Award)Note: An individual must have previously achieved a qualification in vehicle maintenance and repair at Level 2 and all aspects of the entry criteria.

Key:

Class 1 – Motorcycle, with or without side cars (engine size up to 200cc)

Class 2 – Motorcycle, with or without side cars (engine size over 200cc)

Class 4 –

  • 3-wheeled vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight)
  • Cars (up to 8 passenger seats)
  • Motor caravans
  • Quads (max unladen weight 400kg – for goods vehicles and max net power of 15kg)
  • Dual purpose vehicles
  • Private hire and public service vehicles (up to 8 seats)
  • Ambulances and taxis
  • Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (9-12 passenger seats)
  • Goods vehicles (up to 3,000kg design gross weight)

Class 7 – Goods vehicle (over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg design gross weight)
