Overview

Written by employers, the Land-based Service Engineer Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard suitable for technicians looking to further their skills in land-based service engineering. Apprentices can gain experience in providing advanced technical support and guidance across a diverse range of plant, machinery and equipment.

Designed with different learning styles in mind, IMI’s solution ensures apprentices are fully engaged and prepared for their End-Point Assessment (EPA). This new standard is suited to those who would have typically undertaken the Level 3 Land-based Engineering apprenticeship framework.

Role

Land-based Service Engineering Technicians typically work on site utilising their own initiative in a customer facing role. They are often called upon to mentor and supervise junior colleagues and dispense advice to customers on machinery selection. Typically they are involved in the inspection, diagnosis and repair of complex faults in machinery, plant and equipment as well as compiling repair proposals, estimates and quotations for customers.

Duration

Typically it is expected that it will take between 36 to 48 months to complete the apprenticeship.

Employer Group

CLAAS UK Ltd, Toro, Kubota (UK), AGCO Ltd, Ransomes Jacobson, John Deere, Case New Holland, Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA), Institute of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE)

Entry Requirements

Employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices. Typically this includes 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or Grade 4 or equivalent to include English, mathematics and a science subject. It is desirable that the apprentice has a basic understanding of Information and Communication Technology as well as demonstrating the following qualities:

  • Strong work ethic
  • Advanced problem solving and self-organisation skills
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Works well independently and as part of a team
  • Self-motivation

Additional Mandatory Requirements

English and Maths at Level 2 (or equivalent) is required to be held by the learner prior to the EPA. For further detail regarding Maths and English requirements, please refer to the Assessment Plan for the Standard.

Assessment Overview

There are no requirements for formative assessment. However, employers are recommending that, in addition to the formal EPA Gateway, there are also on-programme gateways in place. The on-programme gateways can be used to review the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviour, as set out by the gateway criteria. This will also confirm that the apprentice is meeting expectations at the Gateways prior to commencing their EPA.

End-Point Assessment Gateway (Mandatory)

  • Level 2 English and Maths
  • Review of the ‘log of progression’ (IMI eLogbook available)

End-Point Assessment

  • Review of completed ‘log of progression’ (IMI eLogbook available)
