Overview

Employers within the Automotive retail industry have designed the new approved Apprenticeship Standard for technicians who service and repair light vehicles. This standard will replace the current SASE level 3 framework and will attract government funding.

Role

A motor vehicle technician services and repairs light vehicles and works either in dealerships that focus on a particular manufacturer, or for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. They work on all the systems found within the vehicle. The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment.

Duration 36 months

It is expected that it will typically take three years for the Apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace, although it may be less if the individual already has significant training and practical experience.

Employer group

Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda, VW Group (Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles), Stratstone Group, Arnold Clark Group, Cavalier garages, Quality Car Service Jim Steele Garages, Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF).

Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. It is recommended during the selection process that candidates demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Interested in the way vehicles operate
  • Potential to research, analyse and solve problems
  • Organised, methodical and pays attention to detail
  • Able to work in a team and to communicate well both orally and in writing
  • Cares about delivering excellent service – both internally and externally to colleagues and customers
  • Is able to demonstrate general analytical and mechanical skills

It is also recommended that the candidate can demonstrate a capacity for mechanical reasoning and good spatial awareness.

Assessment overview

On-programme assessment will include employers and training providers reviewing an Apprentice’s progress via summative assessments at gateways 1 and 2. These assessments are designed to review the Apprentice’s behaviour, knowledge and skills against set gateway criteria.
In addition, the Apprentice, employers and training providers are required to maintain an E-Log book evidencing progress over the duration of the apprenticeship.
