This combined Bus/Coach/LCV Inspection route was developed in 2015 for those technicians who carry out vehicle inspections on a wide range of passenger carrying and large commercial vehicles.

The minimum entry requirement is three years' relevant industry experience OR a Level 3 SVQ, NVQ or VCQ (or equivalent qualification) along with a minimum of 12 months' relevant industry experience.

In order to achieve this irtec licence, a technician must first pass two underpinning knowledge (theory test) assessments consisting of 55 questions in total at an IMI approved assessment centre. Of these 55 questions, 40 will be based on technical knowledge and the remaining 15 will relate to current Operator Licence legislation. Once successfully completed there is a maximum 12 month period for the candidate to complete and pass the practical assessments.

To satisfy the requirements of this combined route the candidate will need to be assessed carrying out two complete inspections. One of these must be conducted on a bus/coach and one on a large commercial vehicle, exceeding 7500kgs. Practical assessments are carried out at an irtec approved assessment centre, although they can be carried out in the workplace (under controlled conditions) by an irtec Accredited Assessor.

Once accredited, irtec technicians agree to abide by the irtec code of conduct, receive a licence card, certificate and are placed on the irtec technician’s register. As an additional benefit, irtec licence holders are eligible to apply for a free Halfords Trade Card.
