The minimum entry requirement is 3 years' ‘hands on’ industrial experience or a Level 3 S/NVQ (or equivalent qualification) plus at least one year's experience in a relevant industrial environment.
In order to achieve an irtec licence, a Technician must pass a knowledge test consisting of 40 questions at an IMI approved assessment centre. Questions relate to heavy vehicle trailer inspection procedures, standards, defect categorisation and legislation.
Please note: This online assessment differs from previous assessments because Learners will have access to the DVSA HGV Inspection Manual and the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness. Further information on how to run this online assessment can be found in the irtec Online Assessment Guide, included in the list of documents attached.
Once a Technician has completed the knowledge test they have 12 months in which to successfully complete the practical assessment.
