In order to achieve an irtec licence a candidate must pass an Under Pinning Knowledge (theory) test consisting of 30 questions at an IMI approved Assessment centre. Once you have completed the Under Pinning Knowledge test, you have 12 months in which to successfully complete all the practical assessments.

The practical assessments tested in the Service Maintenance Technician Licence cover the following areas:

  1. Powertrain Systems
  2. Chassis Systems
  3. Braking Systems
  4. Computer Based Test Equipment
  5. Vehicle Electrics

Candidates must gain a pass in five practical assessments (one from each area) in addition to the UPK test at Service Maintenance level to be successful.

Once accredited, irtec technicians agree to abide by the irtec code of conduct, receive a licence card, certificate and are placed on the irtec technicians register. As an additional benefit, irtec licence holders are eligible to apply for a free Halfords Trade Card.
