Your digital profile explained

  • Eligibility

    To be eligible for the Professional Register, you need to have achieved a nationally recognised qualification or an IMI Accredited Assessment at a minimum of Level 2* or above and have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in automotive.

    Your digital profile will identify your Professional Register entry achievement.

    *English qualification level or equivalent

  • Member Grade

    AMIMI

    Awarded if you are qualified with a level 2 or 3 nationally recognised qualification or equivalent and hold at least 2 years’ experience working in automotive.

    MIMI

    Awarded if you are qualified with a level 4 nationally recognised qualification or equivalent and are working in a middle management or higher-level technical role. You must have spent at least 4 of your employed years working in automotive.

    FIMI

    Awarded if you are qualified with a level 5 nationally recognised qualification or equivalent and have secured at least 5 years working in a senior management role. You must have spent at least 2 of your employed years working in automotive.

  • Additional Recognition

    Certificated Automotive Engineer (CAE)

    This can be awarded if you hold a level 2 or 3 nationally recognised qualification or an IMI Accredited Assessment and have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in automotive.

    Advanced Automotive Engineer (AAE)

    This can be awarded if you hold a level 4 nationally recognised qualification or an IMI Accredited Assessment and have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in automotive or have held a CAE qualification for 2 years.

    Certificated Automotive Trainer (CAT)

    This can be awarded if you have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in automotive, evidence of a level 3 teaching qualification, evidence of a level 3 subject knowledge qualification and you are involved in delivering training for at least 24 days per year.

    Certificated Automotive Assessor (CAA) 

    This can be awarded if you have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in automotive, evidence of a level 3 assessing qualification, evidence of a level 3 subject knowledge qualification and you are involved in assessing individuals for at least 24 days per year.

    Advanced Automotive Trainer (AAT) 

    This can be awarded if you have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in automotive, evidence of a level 4 teaching qualification, evidence of a level 4 subject knowledge qualification, be involved in delivering training for at least 24 days per year and can share a case study which demonstrates your ability and understanding to plan and deliver effective training solutions for employers.

    Advanced Automotive Assessor (AdAA)

    This can be awarded if you have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in automotive, evidence of a level 4 assessing qualification, evidence of a level 4 subject knowledge qualification, be involved in assessing individuals for at least 24 days per year and can share a case study which demonstrates your ability and understanding to develop and improve the skills of assessors to support the delivery of effective training solutions for employers.

  • IMI TechSafe

    IMI TechSafe is the latest professional recognition issued by the IMI. Identifying professionalism and safe working practice in the field of electric vehicles (EV) and other safety-critical vehicle systems such as Autonomous or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), IMI TechSafe is your path to future proofing your career and driving your development.

    IMI Techsafe recognition can be gained with an eligible achievement from IMI or another Awarding Organisation*.’

  • British Standard for the Body Repair Sector - BS10125

    BS10125 is a newly revised BSI, national standard for proficient and efficient repair of accident damaged vehicles. The standard includes repair processes, competence of personnel, tools and equipment, and repair process management and control. It is designed to deliver vehicle repairs of a consistently high standard and ensures users stay up to date.

    There are two options to being compliant to BS10125. One is to achieve an eligible nationally recognised qualification or IMI Accredited Assessment and you will need to repeat this achievement every 3 years. The other is to take a continuous professional development (CPD) option, which means you are continuously learning and keeping up to date.  You will have 3-year CPD cycles allocated to you that align to your eligible entry achievement and the job role you perform.
