Heavy Vehicle Training Changes January 2022

The Heavy Vehicle Trailer NOS has now been reviewed by expert working groups across the UK and changes/additions have been suggested. In order to see the updated draft documents please click here.

There were very few changes suggested, a summary is as follows:

  • All units to reference ‘heavy vehicle trailer’, not ‘commercial motor vehicle trailer’
  • Updated definition of ‘Heavy Vehicle Trailer’ in all units to align with DVSA categories:
    • DVSA category O3: Trailers over 3,500 kg but not exceeding 10,000kg.
    • DVSA category O4: Trailers with a DTAW exceeding 10,000kg.
  • HVT01 (Carry out routine heavy vehicle trailer maintenance):
    • Examples of components and adjustments moved from main body of NOS to Scope/range
    • Scope 2 (examination methods) to include ‘performance’
  • HVT03 (Remove and replace heavy vehicle trailer electrical auxiliary units and components):
    • Scope 3 (components) to include ‘networking systems’
  • HVT04 (Remove and replace heavy vehicle trailer chassis units and components):
    • Scope 4 (chassis systems) to include:
      • suspension, including ESP
      • braking, including ABS and EBS
      • wheels (locking and security) and tyre
  • HVT06 (Inspect heavy vehicle trailers):
    • Scope 2 (test methods) to include ‘measurement’
  • HVT08 (Diagnose and rectify heavy vehicle trailer chassis system faults):
    • Scope 1 (chassis systems) –
      • Should this include ancillary systems?
      • If so, should we look at bodybuilding/coachbuilding units?
  • Generic units to be removed from suite as not Heavy Vehicle Trailer specific. To be combined with similar units from other suites when Core NOS Units are reviewed:
    • IMIHVT14 - Diagnose commercial motor vehicle trailer faults where no prescribed process or format is available
    • IMIHVT15 - Assist automotive workshop operations by providing technical support
    • IMIHVT16L - Liaise with motor vehicle and product manufacturers on technical matters
    • IMIHVT17 - Liaise with motor vehicle and product manufacturers on technical matters
    • IMILT018 - Conduct motor vehicle diagnostic consultations with customers
    • IMIHVTAE06 - Diagnose and rectify motor vehicle electrical unit and component faults
