IMI Skills Competitions qualifiers showcase inspirational talent

Apprentices from across the sector competed for places in the National Finals
Fifty-four apprentices demonstrated their skills at the 2026 IMI Skills Competitions qualifiers in May 2026. The competitors were shortlisted for the qualifiers following their success in online knowledge tests across three disciplines - Automotive Technology (Light Vehicle), Automotive Body Repair and Automotive Refinishing – following a record number of entries to the competition this year.
The shortlisted competitors took part in practical assessments during May, with 18 apprentices competing in each discipline. The six highest scorers from each category, who will be announced on 9th July, will progress to the National Finals in Cardiff this November, sponsored by Milwaukee Tools and WD-40.
The Automotive Technology (Light Vehicle) qualifiers were hosted by Delphi Technologies Academy in Leamington Spa. Eyebox Training & Conference Centre in Coventry hosted the Automotive Body Repair and Automotive Refinishing competitions.
Following the National Finals, age-eligible winners may have the opportunity to join Team UK and progress to the WorldSkills International competition in Japan in 2028.
Michael Massey, IMI Skills Competitions Manager, said: “The 2026 national qualifiers showcased some incredible talent from across the industry, with competitors demonstrating exceptional passion, professionalism and technical skill. The assessments across all three disciplines have provided brilliant examples of the future of automotive skills in action. We look forward to announcing the finalists and welcoming these inspirational individuals to the live finals later in the year.”
