National Occupational Standards (NOS) Review 2020/21: Consultation Phase 2

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) started a review of the NOS for Maintenance and Repair – Heavy Vehicle back in the summer of 2020. This was joined by a review of Bus and Coach Engineering and Maintenance NOS in October and November.

A number of online meetings (Expert Working Groups) have now taken place across the four nations – our thanks go to everyone who has participated in these reviews so far.

The main outcomes are:

  • Revised ‘Heavy Vehicle’ NOS would be just as relevant for Bus & Coach Mechanical and Electrical roles
  • Existing ‘Bodybuilding’ NOS closely aligns to the requirements for Bus & Coach Body Repairer/Coachbuilder roles
  • Functional Analysis documents have been updated to reflect current job roles within industry and how these two NOS suites fulfil the standards required for Bus and Coach roles

The suggestion is that:

  • Bus and Coach Mechanical and Electrical roles will use the revised Heavy Vehicle NOS
  • Bus and Coach Repairer and coachbuilder roles will use a new ‘Coachbuilding’ NOS, which has been based on the existing ‘Bodybuilding’ NOS

The new Coachbuilding NOS will include the existing Bodybuilding units for welding, bonding and mechanical fastening, as well as two new units regarding panel preparation and application of paint.

To gather your thoughts and comments on these NOS changes two surveys have been put together:

We would also welcome any emails with feedback and are happy to arrange telephone calls to discuss if required. There will also be a final on-line wash-up meeting on 16th February 2021 to gather final feedback and ensure the sector is satisfied the review has reached a successful conclusion.

To leave feedback or register your interest in the wash-up meeting, please contact Caroline Harris on 07827 856 564, or email carolineh@theimi.org.uk. Alternatively, contact Lloyd Mason on 07920 583638, or email lloyd.rttdc@gmail.com.

The IMI welcomes all who wish to participate - thank you for making this standard current and relevant.
