Time to top up your soft skills

Soft skills

Shifting from full lockdown to a more nuanced approach to daily life has required a great deal of changes to businesses and workers. And there are still hurdles to overcome that will shape the industry long after the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided.

While we navigate our way through these challenges, now could be the time to evaluate our skills. Of course, the IMI will always champion training for specific roles, but there are a range of softer skills that shouldn’t be ignored either.

Team building, mental toughness, CV writing, interview techniques along with a host of others could help provide a solid knowledge-base that could be used as you take your first steps into the industry, in your current role or as you move through your career.

The IMI offers a range of non-technical qualifications, including a Communicating Complex Ideas course for example, designed to help learners explain complex concepts to both colleagues and others who may not have technical expertise. It’s worth spending some time on the IMI’s website seeing what’s available and what you could do to improve your skill-set. There are lots of options available.

We’ll also be adding articles, features and digital events to the MotorPro and COVID-19 areas of our website to provide more information on soft skills and the benefit of looking at this area of your development.

With everything that’s going on there are moments when life can feel uncertain, but there are positive steps we can all make to minimise the impact, and make sure we’re ready for whatever comes next.

If you have any questions that you need answering or want to discuss how the IMI can help you, please contact us on +44 (0)1992 519025, or email hello@theimi.org.uk. We’re here to help.

And for all the latest updates and for government-specific information head to our dedicated COVID-19 website.

Look after yourselves and your families.

With our best wishes,

Lesley
