Automotive Apprenticeships 2019/20

This report examines data released from the Department of Education (DfE) regarding apprenticeship starts in England. This report is an analysis of the full 2019/20 academic year using consolidated data issued by the DfE on the 26th November.

Final figures for 2019/20 show:

  • Since May 2015, there have been 2,600,000 apprenticeship starts in England and 66,400 automotive apprenticeship starts.
  • 71% of automotive apprenticeships were advanced and 28% were intermediate
  • Automotive apprenticeship starts have a significantly younger age profile, 57% of apprenticeship starts in 2019/20 were under the age of 19. 37% were 19-24 and just 9% were over 25
  • Apprenticeship standards made up 57% of automotive apprenticeship starts
  • 65% of apprenticeship starts were supported by ASA levy funds, compared to 47% of automotive apprenticeship starts.
  • Automotive apprenticeship starts fell by 30% from 2018/19.
  • Automotive apprenticeship starts have seen the 6th largest fall of all subject areas
  • Most automotive apprenticeship subject areas saw significant falls in apprenticeship starts in 2019/20 compared to the previous year. Bucking this trend however are Autocare Technicians and Heavy Vehicle Service & Maintenance with very respectable increases.
